The Need for Speed

How fast should an electric security gate open and close? Surely the faster, the better?

For swing gates there is a serious consideration on the safety when the gate leaves are swinging at higher speed. They are simply far more of a risk the faster they swing open and close, in terms of potential injury or damage, but for sliding gates generally the risks and safety can be managed far easier.

BFT, one of the leading manufacturers of electric gate and automation equipment have launched their new faster sliding gate motor system recently primarily for commercial and industrial sliding gate applications but also for use in domestic sliding gates too.
We get asked all the time how fast the gates will open and close...

For commercial premises where the primary use for the automatic sliding gate is to control access to the premises the faster the gate opens the better it is to control potential security breaches. Another benefit of course is reduced waiting times for people and vehicles and therefore keeping potential traffic blockages to a minimum...

We simply are not as used to waiting for anything these days so the idea of being able to have a faster automatic gate operating speed is very appealing to a lot of people and applications, both commercial and domestic.

An electric sliding gate uses quite specific safety sensors for preventing injury and entrapment, which can include a leading edge safety pressure sensor, underground magnetic loop detection, infra red beams across the opening and now also a radar detection system. All these are designed to stop the gate in its opening or closing cycle when there is any obstacle at all in its path.

AGD Systems have installed many more sliding gates over the 36 years than most companies. We seemed to simply get into a groove in terms of the customer perceptions and our own skills to make sliding gates the default system in so many cases. They have many benefits over any other access control and can offer greater security in most cases because of their very basic design and mechanism. They are also easier to maintain and service and generally only have the one motor to look after rather than 2 on a swing gate system..
