Electric Driveway Security Gates
Electric driveway gates are no longer just a visual upgrade and they are also not a luxury in reality. They form a working part of a property's security, access control and daily convenience.
At AGD Systems, we design, manufacture and install bespoke electric entrance gates across the UK, with experience going back to 1986.
The UK market is currently flooded with cheap, low quality gates. They might look fine on day one, but they often fall apart within a few years and offer very little resistance to forced entry.
Our approach is entirely different. We build systems for genuine security and longevity. In fact, some of our earliest installations from forty years ago are still operating today.
Most enquiries start with security, and that can mean keeping unwanted vehicles and people out, but for many it is also about keeping pets and children safely inside the property, especially when you might be near a main road. That is understandable, but it is only part of the picture.
Electric gates control how people and vehicles enter your property. They reduce casual access, manage deliveries, and give you a clear point of interaction through intercom or video systems. At the same time, they remove the need to manually open heavy gates in poor weather or low light. Your gates will always be closed when they are automatically operated as the default system tends to be auto close after a short period of time.
A well designed system should feel effortless. It opens when you need it, closes reliably, and does not draw attention to itself. It does however become your new 'Front door' in many cases if you cannot have a pedestrian side gate. This means you have to treat it as your front door in terms of anyone wanting to access your property including friends and family.
The first decision is usually the gate style and how it moves. This affects layout, cost, and long term reliability.
Swing gates open inward or outward on hinges, much like a traditional garden gate but on a larger scale. They suit properties with sufficient space behind the gate line and are often chosen for their classic appearance. They can be single leaf for narrower entrances or double leaf for wider driveways. Smooth operation depends heavily on ground levels and hinge geometry. Small details matter here.
Sliding gates move laterally across the entrance, either on a track or as a cantilever system. They are typically used where space behind the gate is limited or where the driveway slopes upwards. They require a clear run back area to one side, solid groundwork and accurate alignment. Sliding systems are often preferred for wider openings or where wind exposure is a concern. They are also generally better for security and only use a single motor drive so can be easier to maintain overall over time.
Special designs and mechanisms are also available such as telescopic sliding systems where side room or general space is very limited, such as in many inner city properties.
There are also electric rising gate systems coming out of the ground when there is literally no space to swing or slide inside your entrance and driveway.
There is always a solution when you need an automatic security gate for your home.
Material choice affects appearance, maintenance and lifespan. It also influences weight, which in turn affects motor selection and structural design.
Timber Gates
Timber offers a traditional look and can be tailored to suit both period and contemporary properties. Hardwood options provide durability, while softwood can be a cost effective alternative with the right treatment. They do require ongoing care. That is part of the trade off.
Steel provides heavy duty strength and can be highly ornate, though it requires proper coating to prevent rust. Aluminium is lighter, naturally resists corrosion and offers very low maintenance. Our aluminium gates are built to exceptionally high specifications and carry very long warranties. They are structurally rigid and actively resist forced entry attempts, unlike many flimsy, mass produced metal gates available online.
More about Metal and Aluminium Gates
Some projects combine materials to balance aesthetics and performance, such as pairing metal frames with timber infill panels. This approach can reduce weight without losing visual impact.
The automation system is the working core of the gate. It must be matched correctly to the gate size, weight and usage level.
In-Post motors
The latest development in automation hides the drive mechanism entirely within the gate post itself. We supply the Kustom brand of in-post motors, which provides a completely clean visual line without the heavy groundwork required for underground systems. You can see this new system fully operational in our Northamptonshire showroom. It is an excellent solution when aesthetics are the priority.
Underground Motors
Installed below ground at the hinge point, these traditional hidden motors are another option where appearance matters. They require careful drainage and installation. Done properly, they last.
Above ground motors
Visible, but highly accessible for maintenance, these motors are mounted directly to the gate or posts. They are robust if specified correctly, reliable and often more economical. They suit a wide range of practical applications.
Sliding gate motors
Designed specifically for lateral movement, these systems drive the gate along its track or cantilever system. Power and control are carefully matched to the gate weight and how often it will be used.
Access Control Options
How you open and manage the gate is just as important as the gate itself. As we already said your electric entrance gates are effectively your new front door if you don't have any other access for pedestrians to your home.
Smart controls and app integration
Smart gate control is now a major part of the UK market. Instead of relying purely on physical fobs, systems can connect to your home network or use a dedicated mobile connection. This lets you operate and monitor your gates via a smartphone app from anywhere. You can check if the entrance is secure, let a delivery driver in while you are away, and get alerts when the gates move. Many of our installations also link directly into wider smart home platforms. It is practical control from a device you already carry.
Video intercom systems
Modern video intercoms allow you to see and speak to visitors before granting access. Systems can be connected to internal monitors or mobile devices for remote control. This is often where clients see the biggest daily benefit.
Keypads, fob systems and GSM access units allow controlled entry without needing a physical key. These are highly useful for families, staff or regular visitors.
Standard remote fobs remain common, but many modern setups now integrate directly with smartphone apps and smart home platforms.
Electric gates in the UK must comply with strict safety standards. This is not optional, it is a legal requirement. Unfortunately, many installers ignore these regulations to keep their initial quotes artificially low. We take safety very seriously and refuse to compromise on it.
At AGD Systems, projects are handled from first enquiry through to long term support. That continuity makes a massive difference to the final result.
Every installation begins with a site survey after prices and specifications have been discussed. Levels, access, ground conditions and usage requirements are all assessed before any design work is finalised.
Gates are built to specification. Automation components are selected based on actual operating conditions, not rough assumptions.
A legally compliant system includes safety edges to instantly detect contact, alongside photocells to spot obstructions before the gate even moves. Force limitation and control logic must be thoroughly tested.
Installation includes groundwork, electrical supply, gate fitting and system configuration. Comprehensive safety testing and commissioning are carried out before handover.
Electric gates are mechanical systems. They need periodic servicing to remain reliable, compliant, and totally safe in operation. We provide ongoing maintenance and support.
Our Northamptonshire showroom includes working gate setups, Kustom in-post motors, and live video intercom displays. It is a practical way to compare options and ask questions.
A few points tend to shape most projects:
Overlooking any of these can lead to compromises later. It is worth getting them right early.
We have been installing bespoke electric entrance gates since 1986. The work ranges from single residential entrances to larger country estates, but the approach stays exactly the same. Practical design, high security specifications, proper installation, and systems that continue to work securely for decades.
If you are planning a new installation or upgrading an existing gate, the next step is usually a site visit or a showroom appointment. That is where the detail gets sorted.
