AGD Banner2

AGD Systems have been installing commercial automatic security gates for vehicle and pedestrian access control since 1986. All our work is carried out with the highest attention to design, safety and high quality products for the best reliability and longevity.

Taking full control of all vehicle and pedestrian access to your commercial or industrial site is more important than ever before. Not only keeping control of the personnel on site for health and safety purposes, but also for overall site security too. Controlling vehicle movement is the key element for any automatic security gate or barrier system, when you can have a pedestrian side gate included where appropriate for non vehicle access.

CCTV, site security guarding and lighting are all well and good, but actual physical security at the main access points should be the key focus, along with any other vulnerable doors, windows and openings on site. Talk to us about security steel shutters or security grilles, which we can manufacture, supply and install along with our extensive range of security steel gates, bollards and barriers.

We also offer made to measure standard or high security steel doorsets for protection of the external fabric of the building

Made to Measure - Made Easy

Many of our steel security sliding, swing or bi fold commercial gate systems are made to measure to maximise the access potential on any site and reduce vehicle accidents when an opening is too small. Whilst we offer many off the shelf solutions in standard sizes, the made to measure options are better and often no more costly or longer to manufacture and install.

Security and Strength

All our commercial security gates are manufactured in steel or aluminium, mostly with open view and vented gate designs. Many standard systems are available up to 16 metres wide and nearly most of the systems we sell now are pre-assembled, ready for the easiest and fastest site installation for minimal disruption. Maximum width is almost limitless and of course you can have bi parting to double the width covered.

✔️Steel for strength and durability specifically in commercial sites

✔️Aluminium for lighter weight loading on larger size gates or where designs might be more

✔️Made to measure or standard sizes for new builds

✔️Heavy duty construction and designs for security and longevity

✔️Heavy duty electric motors - high ratings for high usage

Commercial Security Gates Types

Sliding Automatic Cantilever Gates

The most popular commercial security gate by far is the electric sliding gate system, in either a cantilever design or with a bottom track and floor guide, when the ground is level.

A sliding cantilever gate system offers the best security, smoothest operation in all weathers, easiest safety compliance with obstacle detection and all in all are usually the most reliable of all electric gate systems too. Most sliding gates will operate using only a single electric motor drive rather than 2 motors on a pair of swing gates or multiple motors on bi fold gates.

✔️ Best for reliability and longevity

✔️ Lower maintenance costs and usually only one electric motor drive

✔️ Best for security and wind ratings on exposed sites

✔️ Partial opening options for pedestrians or smaller vehicles

✔️Perfect when ground is uneven, sloping or mixed surface with kerbs

✔️ Fastest site installation times for minimal disruption

Fast Installation

All the very latest commercial cantilever gate systems are mostly fully factory assembled and manufactured to near completion for hiab lorry delivery direct to site and the very fastest and easiest on site installation. This obviously minimises site disruption, considering the gates will nearly always be the main entry and exit to most commercial premises.

AGD Systems will consult on the appropriate concrete pad installation to enable the gates to be lowered and secured and commissioned, usually all within one day. Careful co ordination and specification of the power and control cabling is also essential.

Automated Swing Gates

We offer almost limitless options for the designs and sizes for our commercial electric swing gates. Hinged swing gates in commercial applications tend to be when there is no space for a sliding gate system or there is another specific need for a single or pair of swing gates.

Aesthetic appeal is often a major factor for clients, and steel swing gate designs can be far more flexible from the outset if you need to match other building features specifically.

A very popular installation for commercial swing gates will include a pedestrian side gate, usually adjacent to the vehicle entrance gates. Installed with electronic locking this can be part of the overall security and access control for your site. Modern and very reliable video intercom systems give you complete control over pedestrian and vehicle access from anywhere on the site or even off site..

Many of the commercial electric swing gates we have installed over the past 39 years have been on medium to large size companies, farms, schools, offices, showrooms and similar properties, to provide 24 hour security for often isolated entrances, often out of sight from the main building and personnel. For a school premises for example controlling vehicles more than the pedestrian movement is probably obvious for safety and general common sense at the busiest times of the day.

Automated Bi Fold Gates

Bi folding electric gates in commercial applications are often used for smaller width openings and especially where sideroom or space generally is very limited. This can include underground car park access with a restricted tunnel access, any entrance where there might be a building either side or where the speed of opening and closing is important. Electric bi fold gates will usually open at twice the speed of a normal swing gate at the same width.

As with all the commercial gates above the actual gate leaves can be manufactured with a wide range of infill options, including mesh, vertical bar, diamond bar, palisade steel, solid steel, timber cladding and so on…. It is usually recommended to have good air flow in any electric gate design to ensure the gates are not influenced by obstacle detection in very high winds.

Along with our bi folding gates we can also offer telescopic gates and vertical rising gates too for very specific applications and where space might be extremely restricted for other gate options.

Automatic Gate Safety

Safety with any electric operated gate is not an option, but a mandatory requirement by law, especially in a busy public access area, where enhanced safety is recommended for minimal risk of crushing or entrapment and damage to vehicles. Obstacle detection is fitted to all sliding electric gates on the leading edge and usually on the posts either side too. Additional infra red beams prevent the gates closing if there is any obstacle detected.
A combination of pressure sensors, infra red beams, magnetic loop detection in the ground and various sensors to detect the presence of personnel or vehicles are all used depending on the risk assessment and controls used for the electric gates.

For automatic swing or bi fold gates there are usually far more sensors as there are more leading edges and moving parts to consider protecting. Entrapment control is often down to the actual gate design, to ensure it isn’t easy to give open gaps for fingers, limbs or even heads to get trapped. Gate hinge design is often one of the most overlooked areas for crushing and the correct hinges and spacing to prevent this is very important. The speed at which the gate operates is also a consideration too.

Electric gate safety is paramount to the compliancy of any electric gate or door system in the UK and AGD Systems take this element very seriously. Proper initial gate design and safety systems also ensure better longevity by having operation of the gate only possible with a clear opening, preventing any gate damage risk.

Some Common Safety Issues
One of the biggest issues we encounter far too often are electric gates which have been installed by other, non professional trades and incorrect safety sensors used, often completely ignoring potential obvious entrapment areas for the gates as well. We are regularly called to inspect or verify the safety and compliance of electric gates which have been installed from various components bought online, but not necessarily meant to work together.

A common practice also seen is using cheaper, low powered gate motors drives, which then have to be turned right up on their power settings to get the gates to actually work in higher winds. Electric motors with built in pressure sensors are not practical in most applications because wind pressure will prevent the gate working if the power is not sufficient to drive the gate and the safety should always be other independent sensors and not the motor drive itself.

A single set of infra red beams across the opening does NOT constitute proper overall safety on any remote controlled automatic electric gate, it is just a single part of the overall safety system which should be installed on most gates. Modern detection sensors are reliable and should be installed to have complete faith that your automatic gate will never be able to damage any vehicle or person during operation, especially in a busy commercial entrance where the general public might even have access too.
When first put into action all electric gates are subject to the ‘Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations and have to meet minimum standards and include full instructions and ongoing maintenance requirements for regular checks on the safety controls in place.

Automatic Parking Barriers

Automatic rising parking barriers are commonly used for traffic control in so many applications to prevent unauthorised access to private and public car parks, busy commercial premises and multiple public buildings across the UK. AGD Systems offer a wide variety of rising parking barriers from around 3m wide up to 10m wide. 24 hour operation is often required so 100% duty cycle motors are commonplace in rising barriers.

Card readers, token slots, magnetic key fobs, digital keypads, timed auto access and exit, radar detection, ANPR number plate recognition systems and good old fashioned remote control are just some of the many ways to control parking barriers. Obviously a lot depends on the security requirements, whether the access is to a public or private zone and how many parking spaces there are to control.
Private car parks are using ANPR systems more frequently now whilst public car parks using parking barriers will tend to link to their own ticket or payment system for revenue generation and timed control when required.
