AGD Systems recently completed a specialist installation of remote control electric rising parking bollards for a domestic customer, creating a powerful physical barrier to prevent vehicle theft while keeping everyday access quick and convenient.

Client brief and security challenge

The homeowner was increasingly concerned about vehicle theft from the driveway, a growing problem across the UK where criminals are bypassing factory-fitted alarms, keyless entry systems and even traditional gates. They needed a solution that would physically stop vehicles being driven away, without obstructing pedestrians, affecting the appearance of the property or triggering planning issues often associated with tall driveway gates.

AGD solution: twin remote control rising bollards

AGD Systems specified and installed two heavy duty automatic steel rising bollards positioned at the mouth of the driveway, forming a secure line that vehicles cannot cross when the bollards are raised. The bollards are operated via remote control handsets from inside the vehicle, allowing the homeowner to lower them before arrival or as they approach, then raise them again once the vehicle is safely parked.

When retracted, the bollards sit flush with the driveway surface, leaving the entrance visually open and unobstructed for pedestrians, deliveries and day to day movement. When raised, the robust steel construction and deep foundations create a formidable physical barrier designed to withstand the impact forces associated with most attempted drive offs or quick thefts, but they still allow pedestrian access, parcel deliveries and visitors too.

Installation details and specialist groundwork

Because this was a retrofit on an existing domestic driveway, AGD’s engineers carried out careful groundworks to core out and excavate for each bollard housing, ensuring correct depth, drainage and concrete reinforcement. All ducting and power cabling was installed beneath the surface to feed the control cabinet and bollard motors, keeping the finished installation neat, discreet and weather resistant.

The control system was configured to operate both bollards together from a single command, guaranteeing that the driveway is either fully open or fully protected at all times. Safety features such as obstacle detection, emergency stop and manual override were incorporated to provide reliable operation and peace of mind for the homeowner.

Everyday use and customer benefits

In daily use, the homeowner simply presses a button on the remote control, waits for the bollards to lower, then drives in or out as normal before raising them again once the vehicle has cleared the entrance. Unlike gates, which can be restricted by opening arcs, hinges or roadside gradients, the rising bollards preserve full driveway width and maintain clear sightlines to the road.

Because the solution leaves the driveway visually open when the bollards are lowered, it avoids many of the aesthetic and planning concerns that can arise with solid or tall gates in conservation areas or on open-plan estates. At the same time, the visible presence of the bollards when raised acts as a strong deterrent, signalling that the property is protected by a serious physical security measure rather than just an electronic immobiliser or alarm.

Rising trend: driveway bollards for UK homes

With vehicle theft rising and criminals increasingly able to bypass electronic car security, more UK homeowners are turning to automatic rising bollards as a reliable way to protect high value vehicles on the driveway, particularly 4x4 models in the UK. Driveways and semi private areas at or near home now account for a significant share of vehicle thefts, making physical access control at the property boundary more important than ever.

Rising bollards offer a strong blend of security, convenience and subtle design: they are difficult to defeat, simple to use every day and unobtrusive when not in use. For homeowners who cannot or do not wish to install driveway gates, or who want a higher level of physical protection alongside existing gates, AGD Systems’ remote control rising bollard solutions provide an effective answer to modern vehicle crime.
