Cantilever Sliding Gates

Cantilever sliding gate systems do not require a ground track - this can be advantageous where the driveway entrance slopes, busy or heavy traffic entrances or where minimal disturbance to the driveway surface is requested.

The main design difference from a tracked system is that the cantilever system has a special section bottom rail in which incorporates two sets of enclosed roller wheels set apart at a pre- determined distance  to a large concrete foundation base.

The cantilever sliding gate is approx 1/3 longer than a tracked slider, the extra length acts as a counterbalance so that the gate is free to slide back and forth, supported throughout the entire opening/closing width by the roller wheels within the bottom rail.

There is a slam post assembly at one end and stops at the other end to ensure that the gate cannot slide free of it mountings and fall over.  Often the lower leading edge has a wheel which engages into a guide/shoe to ensure correct engagement upon closing.

The gate is held up-right by a guide rail and a roller. Guides positioned at the mid or top rail height.

In the manual mode the gate is very easy to slide open and closed as the roller wheels incorporate precision bearings.

The method of automation is based on a rack and pinionprinciple, the motor unit has a drive gear which engages into a linear rack positioned on the lower inside face of the gate, the motor gear wheel simply drives the gate open and closed.

The motor incorporates aelectronic controls which can be set up to the correct closing force and open/close positions. It can also provide a smaller opening aperture to allow pedestrian only access if required.

Sliding gate systems must include appropriate safety devices to ensure they meet the latest European safety legislation.

Safety requirements will be identified during a site survey/risk assessment and may include the following:-

  • deformable Safety edges to reduce the risk of impact or shearing 
  • infrared Photocell Safety Beams
  • Induction Ground Safety Loop Detectors
  • Obsticle Detection and Force Limitation safety systems

Business Park Cantilever Sliding Gate

Client Brief:

To secure the entrance to a large business park and to reduce break-ins and theft from the business units.

The gate had to open automatically in the morning and close again at the end of the working day. However, as some of the business operate 24-7, an access control system with time and attendance monitoring was to be installed on both entry and exit. Each staff member from each business was issued with their own personal pin code and the system had to have the facility to remotely disable individual pins or all pins for each business. Combined with CCTV the systems use would be monitored remotely.

Since the gate was installed our Client achieved 100% occupancy for the first time, has achieved higher rents and their tennants are extremely happy with the much improved security.

The access control and CCTV has proved invaluable when the gate has sustained mild damage, as the user can be tracked by both CCTV and the date/time stamp from the access control system.
This has simplified the process of identifying those responsible for damage and the billing for repairs.
