Cantilever Systems

Cantilever Sliding Gates

Cantilever sliding gate systems do not require a ground track - this can be advantageous where the driveway entrance slopes, busy or heavy traffic entrances or where minimal disturbance to the driveway surface is requested.

The main design difference from a tracked system is that the cantilever system has a special section bottom rail in which incorporates two sets of enclosed roller wheels set apart at a pre- determined distance  to a large concrete foundation base.

The cantilever sliding gate is approx 1/3 longer than a tracked slider, the extra length acts as a counterbalance so that the gate is free to slide back and forth, supported throughout the entire opening/closing width by the roller wheels within the bottom rail.

There is a slam post assembly at one end and stops at the other end to ensure that the gate cannot slide free of it mountings and fall over.  Often the lower leading edge has a wheel which engages into a guide/shoe to ensure correct engagement upon closing.

The gate is held up-right by a guide rail and a roller. Guides positioned at the mid or top rail height.

In the manual mode the gate is very easy to slide open and closed as the roller wheels incorporate precision bearings.

The method of automation is based on a rack and pinionprinciple, the motor unit has a drive gear which engages into a linear rack positioned on the lower inside face of the gate, the motor gear wheel simply drives the gate open and closed.

The motor incorporates aelectronic controls which can be set up to the correct closing force and open/close positions. It can also provide a smaller opening aperture to allow pedestrian only access if required.

Sliding gate systems must include appropriate safety devices to ensure they meet the latest European safety legislation.

Safety requirements will be identified during a site survey/risk assessment and may include the following:-

  • deformable Safety edges to reduce the risk of impact or shearing
  • infrared Photocell Safety Beams
  • Induction Ground Safety Loop Detectors
  • Obsticle Detection and Force Limitation safety systems

Large Cantilever Sliding Gate

Client Brief:

To provide a secure sliding vehicle gate with steel palisade fence infill, Voice Intercom to office location.

Sliding gate to be trackless as entrance has high frequency of commercial use.

Description:
Large Automatic Sliding Gate with Access Controls

Location:
Fosse Way, Warwickshire

This installation was carried out on behalf of a packaging company at their logistics depot on The Fosse Way, Warwickshire.

The key requirements were security and to allow large vehicles to enter & leave safely. The gates were constructed from robust steel box section frame members overclad with zinc galvanised palisade vertical uprights.

The gates are fully supported in the open and close positions by heavy duty galvanised steel support posts. The gate entrance sloped left to right which meant that a ground track could not be fitted. To overcome this we specified a trackless cantilever type sliding gate. As can be seen from the photograph the overall gate length is approximately 30% longer than the entrance width to provide a counter balance to allow the gate to run freely on the guide roller arrangement.

The gates are automated using a heavy duty sliding gate motor which is controlled from the nearby office using an intercom with hold open facility. A code pad allows authorised access out of hours.

All civil works, ducting and power supply requirements were provided by the main contractor with AGD Systems installing and commissioning the gate system and access controls.
